Loading Bays in London

When it comes to loading and unloading in London it can be difficult to find the correct space, however loading bays are an essential part of the red route network as they allow drivers to load/unload their goods.

In some special circumstances you can apply for and be granted a red route dispensation. You must obtain one to:

  • load/unload for a longer time than the listed street sign
  • park on a red line during restricted hours

Red route dispensations are managed by Transport for London.

If you require a dispensation for roads that have yellow lines you must contact the relevant London borough. Across the city there are several different rules depending on which borough you choose to load/unload in.

You can also apply for a parking suspension to reserve a particular loading bay which will suspend all limits and restrictions allowing you to conduct your heavy goods loading/unloading.

The download below lists the current rules for observation times for free loading and unloading. It also includes each borough's contact details if you need to apply for a suspension or a dispensation.
